This fascinating sugoroku game sheet on women’s social roles in the Meiji period was issued as a supplement to the January 1910 issue of Fujin Sekai (婦人世界), a popular women’s monthly magazine. The illustrations are sensitively and finely drawn, providing rich detail about women’s working and domestic environments.

Players may begin the game from four different social positions: a factory worker, the daughter of a wealthy family, a student, or a housemaid. During the game, they encounter a range of occupations, including hairdresser, teacher, doctor and nurse. They also experience a variety of domestic duties, including cleaning, child-rearing, sewing and cooking.


The goal is to achieve family happiness, represented by a dinner-table scene in which three generations gather to play a board game. The game offers an engaging depiction of various aspects of Japanese women’s lives at the beginning of the twentieth century.
