This extra-large colour sugoroku game sheet was issued as a supplement to the January 1925 issue of Shufu no Tomo (主婦の友), a popular monthly magazine for housewives. It reflects the more liberal attitudes towards young women that emerged during the Taishō period, when modernism was increasingly accepted in society, including by women themselves.

The game features various sports, including tennis, running, swimming, volleyball, basketball and high jump. It begins with a group of young women beneath an English sign reading “Womans Sports”. The girls are depicted in dynamic poses, striving energetically to succeed in their competitions. The goal of the game is to win the champion’s cup.

Although participation in such sports was available only to a limited number of young women, vigorous involvement in athletic competition is presented here in a highly positive light.
