Colour sugoroku game sheet, 54 x 76cm.

This colourful and fascinating sugoroku game sheet was a supplement to the January 1926 issue of Shojo Sekai, a popular monthly magazine for young girls. As the radio broadcasting in Japan started in 1925, people were enthusiastic to learn more about wireless broadcasting. In addition, the Taisho democracy period allowed women to explore non-traditional gender roles in the society, including appearing in radio broadcasting and playing active sports, such as tennis and skiing.

The game features appearances of young girl musicians on a radio station which is run by girls. The broadcasting also covers an arrival of an imaginative female airplane pilot's arrival from Italy. In addition, activities such as playing tennis and skiing are included in the game as well. While some traditional domestic activities, including cooking and shopping are also featured, more public activities, such as music and sporting performances are positively presented throughout the game. The goal shows a family's appreciation of a musical performance by a young girl's friend on the radio.
