"Based on the author's 1993 ANU PhD, 'White Mutiny: British Military Culture in India, 1825-75' offers the first study of the East India Company's Bengal European force, examining these soldiers - effectively mercenaries - in the context of the Company's consolidation of its conquests up to and during the 1857 Mutiny-Rebellion. The rebellion saw the end of the Company and the transfer of its European soldiers to the Crown. The troops objected, staging the 'White Mutiny' of 1859, the largest (and most successful) mutiny the British Army has evener seen. The book traces the extinction of the European force in the decades after 1859." (Publisher's description).
