東京. [Tokyo]. 朝日新聞東京本. [Asahi Shinbun Tōkyō Honsha]. Showa 27 [ 1952]. Stock ID #224141 This landmark issue of Asahi Graph, dated 6 August 1952, brought photographs of the devastation and human suffering caused by the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki to a wide Japanese readership following the end of the Allied occupation. Reporting on the bombings had been restricted by censorship during the Allied occupation. The issue is significant not only for this reporting but also for what it reveals about the understanding of the bombs’ effects at the time. When referring to this item please quote stockid 224141.
Special issue of The Asashi Picture News, black and white photographic illustrations and numerous black and white illustrations including cartoons, 26pp, 36.5 x 26cm. Browning, light crease where the magazine has been folded, spine a little chipped and worn. A sound secondhand copy.
The front cover shows a young woman smiling brightly at the Peace Bridge in Hiroshima, in sharp contrast to the shocking content within, where photographs of badly burnt victims and devastated cities reveal the extent of the damage. The issue also explores the background to nuclear weapons development and a "uranium factory".
Of particular interest, a variety of people, including popular cartoonists and schoolchildren, contributed atomic-bomb-themed work. On the last page, several well-known figures, among them a baseball player and a novelist, answer a questionnaire on their attitudes to peace and war.
Price: $195.00 AU
