A 1940s reprint of Balai Poestaka’s old-spelling edition of this important classical Malay hikayat, generally known in modern spelling as Hikayat Bayan Budiman. A bayan is a parrot and budiman means wise or virtuous, giving the title the sense “The Tale of the Wise Parrot”. The work belongs to the classical Malay narrative tradition and is treated in library records as folklore or classical literature. An uncommon post-war Balai Poestaka printing of a significant traditional Malay text.
