The two parts in one volume, 6 folding maps or plans (including one in duplicate), (iv) the publisher's cancel "Corrections of Errors in the First Part" pasted over the "Notice" (for Part II), "List of Plans in Part II" + "Corrigenda" (for Part II) on the verso + 531pp. 22 x 14cm. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine label between gilt-decorated raised bands, neat previous owner's signature, a very good copy.
The work served as a highly polemical and fiercely protective defence by William Napier (1785-1860), of his brother Sir Charles Napier's (1782-1853) controversial actions and administrative reputation, following the conquest of Sindh, and the text became a lightning rod for criticism. This intense scrutiny forced the publisher to issue a full-page "Corrections of Errors" cancel leaf at the launch of Part II, which (as here) the binder has pasted directly over the original introductory "Notice" capturing a real-time editorial scramble.
