[The Shower. Mother and Child in Rain].

(San Francisco). (Circa 1897). Stock ID #224353

Limited edition coloured etching on fine laid paper, 26.5 x 11.3cm, 33.3 x 16.5cm (sheet), signed in pencil lower right with the edition number "21" lower left (of 100), margins age-toned with two spots at head and foot (not affecting the image), remains of hinging tape verso, the image in very good condition.

Early career etching by Helen Hyde (1868-1919), pioneering American printmaker, heavily tied to her sketches of San Francisco's Chinatown, tenderly capturing a Chinese mother and child huddling close together under a large, vivid blue umbrella, braving the elements, as sharp, diagonal lines of rain streak across the image.

Created two years before Hyde moved to Japan, it shows her love (and mastery) of the Japonisme style, developed through studying Japanese art in Paris and observing Asian communities in California. Hyde was strongly influenced by Mary Cassatt, evidenced by her economy of line and use of a subdued colour palette (save for the pop of yellow on the child's hat). Hyde's work in San Francisco’s Chinatown marked her as a rare Western female artist to document daily life there at the turn of the century.
