Tsuchiya Koitsu’s (1870-1949) famous woodblock depicting the "Floating Pavilion" (Mangetsu-ji temple) on Lake Biwa during winter. Rooted in the traditional "Eight Views of Ōmi", this scenic view achieved masterpiece status during the 20th-century Shin-hanga (New Prints) movement. Tsuchiya Koitsu began his career as a war artist, but in 1931, at the age of 60, he began work for Shōzaburō Watanabe and became an exponent of the Shin-hanga movement of Japanese artists. This atmospheric print originally published in 1934 is from a later post-war strike.
