After the sudden death of a young girl who was suffering from a fever the villagers of Bisipara in eastern India are convinced that her death was caused by her possession by evil spirits. A hurried inquiry is carried out to find the person "responsible". The author, who was doing field work in the village, tells what it is like to be living there during this witch-hunt.
