Madurese Seafarers - Professor Campbell Macknight On Kurt Stenross's new book

Thursday, Aug 18, 2011

To Celebrate the Publication of Kurt Stenross's 'Madurese Seafarers: Prahus, Timber and Illegality on the Margins of the Indonesian State', Professor Emeritus Campbell Macknight (ANU), an authority on Eastern Indonesia and Prahu Shipping, will speak at Asia Bookroom.

If you are interested in the sailing craft of Indonesia or its traditional maritime society, this is a talk you shouldn't miss. This is a remarkable book on a world that has now all but disappeared!

Madurese Seafarers is the most recent book in the Southeast Asia Publications Series of the Asian Studies of Australia.

About the author:

Kurt Stenross has been studying the sailing craft of Indonesia since 1974. Holder of a PhD from Murdoch University and a skilled carpenter, he lives in Bunbury, Western Australia. Unfortunately due to distance Kurt can't be with us but fellow expert Campbell Macknight, one of the professional readers of the manuscript, has kindly agreed to talk about the book and the subject.
Campbell Macknight, a historian at the Australian National University and formerly the University of Tasmania, has specialized in the prahu fishermen and maritime cultures of Eastern Indonesia. He is also the Editor of RIMA (Review of Indonesian & Malay Affairs).
