About the book: Keepsakes is a personal guide for families about the "stuff" and "stories" they want to share with the next generation (family or museum). The memoir combines Dr. Sherene Suchy's experience as a Social Worker and co-executor for a family estate in Oregon USA with insights from nearly 100 interviews with families plus specialists in estate and heritage management: conservation staff, reminiscence therapists, and experts in significance assessment. In eight chapters, Sherene provides a framework based on her work with the family estate and how she used museums as role models for the 'museum of you' at home. Along the way, readers (family and professionals) discover the true meaning of inheritance and how provenance (an heirloom's life story) can become the 'first page' of a much bigger story.

This practical guide helps people wrestling with the difficult decisions around the future of the material life of a family and how to deal with the complicated decisions about what to keep, how to keep the items, whether to give items or archives to an institution such as a museum and how to do this and what to shred or let go.

About the author: Dr Sherene Suchy is a Canberra based social worker and member of the International Council of Museums. Sherene taught for ten years in the School of Management at the University of Technology Sydney. Her previous publications include Leading with Passion: Change Management in the 21st Century Museum and chapters in books such as Museum Management and Marketing, Museum Philosophy for the 21st Century and Reinventing the Museum.

Sherene will be in conversation with Gay von Ess OAM, who is a celebrity in the Canberra autism world and in recent times a family history explorer.
