Meredith McKinney Speaks About Her New Translation of Natsume Soseki's 'Kokoro' Highly regarded translator Meredith McKinney will talk about her new translation of the early modern Japanese classic Kokoro, by Natsume Sôseki, just published in the Penguin Classics series. Kokoro, considered a key work in the history of modern Japanese literature, embodies Japan's struggles to psychologically come to terms with the process of rapid modernization at the turn of last century. It's also a terrific read! Meredith, a Visiting Fellow at the ANU's Japan Centre, has also translated The Pillow Book, and Sôseki's earlier novel Kusamakura for Penguin, as well as several works by contemporary author Furui Yoshikichi. She is a translator of great ability who has a deep understanding of the world that these works come from and describe. She is also a wonderful speaker as those who heard her speak at Asia Bookroom on the publication of her translation of The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon can verify!
